My mom came to São Paulo with six small children on a bus, a trip that lasted two and a half days. She bought four seats for the seven of us. Some of us would sit on the floor, and some on each others’ laps. She would only get out of the bus with us to use the bathrooms, and she avoided that as much as possible because she was terrified she’d lose one of us in the middle of the way or at the bus station. I was four years-old, and the youngest was six months.
